Yamaha starts German company to swap and recycle batteries from e-bikes and scooters

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the establishment of ENYRING GmbH, a new company that will provide swappable batteries for compact urban electric vehicles through subscription-based services in Germany. ENYRING aims to create a closed loop of recycling and reusing batteries in collaboration with European circularity leaders, thereby contributing to the creation of new products from recycled materials.
The initiative is designed to foster a sustainable, recycling-oriented society that not only reduces the economic and time burden on customers but also minimizes environmental impact. ENYRING, which was officially established this month, will be headquartered in Berlin, Germany, with operations set to commence in the first half of 2025.
The company plans to collaborate with Yamaha Motor and strategic partner companies, with an expansion strategy in place for the business in Germany, starting with Berlin, and in the Netherlands. ENYRING’s services will primarily target compact urban electric vehicles in the low-speed range, such as eBikes. The company will rent out batteries on a subscription basis, which can be easily swapped at any of the battery stations installed throughout a city. This eliminates the need for recharging and the cost of purchasing a new battery once the current one reaches the end of its lifecycle.
Used batteries that are no longer suitable for mobility use will be repurposed as storage batteries, disassembled into cells, recycled, and reused as new batteries. This project is part of Yamaha Motor’s efforts to create a carbon-neutral world, providing new value in daily transportation. The business will contribute to waste reduction, sustainable use of natural resources, and improved energy efficiency, all of which are key issues identified in the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050.
