Ultium Cells’ Tennessee plant begins shipping batteries, to be used in Cadillac Lyriq

Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, has commenced the production and shipment of the first battery cells from its plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
The announcement comes two and a half years after the company began construction of the facility, designed to produce millions of battery cells annually for use in new GM electric vehicles. The first batch of battery cells has been shipped to the neighboring GM Spring Hill assembly plant for use in the production of the Cadillac Lyriq crossover. The Acura ZDX crossover, another upcoming model, is also expected to utilize the Ultium batteries.
The Spring Hill battery plant is situated along Highway 31 between Spring Hill and Columbia. The inaugural battery cell shipment took place on Thursday, March 21st, 2024. The facility began its initial production operations in the previous year, following the commencement of operations at the company’s Lordstown, Ohio plant in September 2022.
The joint venture is currently accepting job applications for the Spring Hill facility as it plans to expand the plant’s production capacity.
This comes hot on the heels of their announcement that the Lansing, Michigan Ultium Cells gigafactory is 35% completed, and expects to ship cells in 2025:
