Sion Power & Muhlbauer to create lithium metal cell manufacturing line

Sion Power Corporation, a technology developer of next-generation batteries for electric vehicles (EV), and MB ATECH, a member of the Muhlbauer Group and a German turnkey solution provider, have announced a partnership to establish an automated manufacturing line for Sion Power’s large format lithium metal cell.
The fully-automated manufacturing line will have the capacity to produce 75MWh of 56 Ah lithium metal cells annually. The cells produced will be supplied to automotive OEMs, cell manufacturers, and others for comprehensive testing of Sion Power’s Licerion technology. This technology aims to alleviate range anxiety by significantly increasing the driving range or improving energy utilization per unit weight compared to conventional lithium-ion cells.
Sion Power reports that its Licerion® technology is a sophisticated approach to lithium-metal batteries that contain twice the energy in the same size and weight battery, compared to a traditional lithium-ion battery. With up to 500 Wh/kg, Licerion batteries are produced at scale in large-format cells. This has the potential to significantly enhance the performance of commercial and consumer electric vehicles.
Founded in 1981 in Bavaria, the Mühlbauer Group has grown into a global player in the fields of Parts & Systems, Semiconductor Related Products, Document Solutions & Equipment for Security Systems, and innovative Technologies for eMobility. MB ATECH GmbH – Advanced Energy Technologies, one of the affiliated companies operating within the Mühlbauer Group, brings unique machinery requirements to serial production. For the eMobility industry, the company offers highly efficient production lines for the manufacture of pouch- and prismatic cells for lithium-ion batteries, as well as MEA’s & stacks for fuel cells.
