Renesas’ New 16-bit RL78/G24 MCU Delivers Top-Class Performance for Motor Control and Power Supply Control Systems

– Renesas Electronics Corporation has announced a new addition to its RL78 microcontroller (MCU) Family, the RL78/G24, which offers top-class performance for motor control and power supply control systems.– The RL78/G24 features a flexible application accelerator (FAA) and a fast CPU, with enhanced peripheral functions ideal for motor control, power supply control, and lighting control.
Renesas Electronics Corporation has released the RL78/G24, a new addition to its RL78 microcontroller (MCU) family. The RL78/G24 stands out in performance among the RL78 family. It features an application-specific Flexible Application Accelerator (FAA) and a fast CPU that operates at 48MHz. These enhancements, alongside superior peripheral functions like analog and timer capabilities, make it ideal for motor control, power supply control, and lighting control.
The FAA allows tasks such as inverter control, encryption, sensing, and arithmetic operations to be distributed efficiently and independently of the CPU, boosting processing speed significantly. Vice President of MCU Device Solution Division at Renesas, Toshihiko Seki stated, “We are thrilled to introduce the top-of-the-line product from the popular RL78 Family…the RL78 Family empowers our customers to achieve the highest performance, while minimizing costs.”
Osamu Ogura, Software Development Manager at TESSERA TECHNOLOGY INC., shared that by using the FAA capability of the RL78/G24, development time was shortened as it allowed division of communication processing for the CPU and power control.
The RL78/G24 offers two power-saving modes: HALT mode reduces power consumption by 60% compared to normal operation mode; STOP mode further reduces power consumption by 99% compared to HALT mode. Developers can use the Smart Configurator to generate driver code for peripheral functions via a graphical user interface (GUI).
Key features of the RL78/G24 series include a 12-bit A/D converter, high-speed comparator with a latency of 50 ns (nanosecond), DALI-2 function for lighting communication standard, high temperature support up to 125°C, and a compact package.
Renesas has combined the RL78/G24 with the RAA227063 smart gate driver and other analog and power products to create the Portable Power Tools Solution. This solution integrates a motor driver, battery pack, and battery charger for efficient motor drive operation with accurate and reliable battery management.
The introduction of the RL78/G24 will enhance motor control and power supply control systems in the electric vehicle industry. Its efficient processing speed, power-saving modes, and compact design offer potential for smaller, more efficient electric vehicle systems.
