onsemi and BorgWarner Expand Strategic Collaboration for Silicon Carbide Worth Over $1 Billion in Lifetime Value

– BorgWarner and onsemi are expanding their strategic collaboration for silicon carbide (SiC), with a total agreement value exceeding $1 billion.– BorgWarner will incorporate onsemi’s EliteSiC 1200 V and 750 V power devices into its VIPER power modules, improving the performance of electric vehicles (EVs).

BorgWarner and onsemi, experts in intelligent power and sensing technologies, are enhancing their silicon carbide (SiC) collaboration. The total agreement value now surpasses $1 billion. BorgWarner will include onsemi’s EliteSiC 1200 V and 750 V power devices into its VIPER power modules, enhancing EV performance.

onsemi’s EliteSiC technology provides high-performance while meeting quality, reliability, and supply assurance standards required for the EV traction market. With years of experience in power semiconductor product design, development, and manufacturing, onsemi supports successful integration in high-volume auto applications.

Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, PowerDrive Systems said, “First and foremost, onsemi’s continuous and strategic investment in ramping SiC manufacturing capacity across its end-to-end supply chain gives us confidence in our ability to support the increasing demand for our solutions, now and in the future.”

BorgWarner’s SiC traction inverters offer higher efficiency, superior cooling performance, faster-charging rates in a compact package than other EV options. Incorporating EliteSiC technology is expected to boost power density and efficiency, augmenting the range and overall EV performance.

“Integration of EliteSiC technology in the traction inverter enables increased gas-equivalent miles per gallon (MPGe), which helps alleviate range anxiety – one of the key barriers to EV adoption,” said Simon Keeton, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Power Solutions Group, onsemi. “With onsemi’s chip-to-system level support and a track record of execution, we are able to provide industry-leading SiC-based solutions to BorgWarner at an accelerated pace to support its go-to-market requirements.”

This collaboration will amplify the performance of electric vehicles by leveraging silicon carbide technology, thereby propelling the EV industry’s evolution.
