Italy launching electric submarines, powered by FAAM’s LFP cells

FAAM, a battery maker based in Teverola, Italy, announced it will provide LFP batteries and BMS technology for a military submarine program.

This will be a part of a development project for Italy’s new submarine generation, the U212 NFS.

According to OCCAR (an international defense equipment body), the test results of the lithium battery system showed increased operational efficiency, improved propulsion and endurance, reduced maintenance, and the highest levels of onboard safety.

They estimate they’ll need four vessels. Naval News reported that Japan is currently the only country with lithium-ion battery submarines in the water, with South Korea expected to follow soon. France is proposing a lithium-ion submarine to Indonesia, and Germany’s TKMS is also working on the technology. It has been previously reported that China is considering replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium-ion ones in its military submarine fleet.
