ION Storage Systems’ solid-state battery is the first anodeless &compressionless battery to achieve 125 cycles

ION Storage Systems, a Maryland-based manufacturer of solid-state batteries (SSBs), has announced the first market deployment of its anodeless and compressionless SSB with the U.S. military.
The SSB has successfully achieved and exceeded 125 cycles with less than 5% capacity degradation in performance, indicating the potential for more than 1000 cycles in future deployments. ION has been collaborating with the Department of Defense (DoD) to rigorously test its SSB battery before expanding into other markets such as electric vehicles, energy storage, consumer electronics, and aerospace.
ION’s U.S.-designed and manufactured SSB battery cells are the first to achieve this milestone. ION’s patented solid-state anodeless technology avoids the use of graphite and other less sustainable materials, maximizing battery capabilities through its revolutionary 3-D, ceramic structure. The SSB requires no compression, swell budget, extensive cooling system, or heavy fire barriers. This, combined with the ability to accommodate existing and future cathode technologies, translates to simple and cost-effective manufacturing at scale. ION’s SSB is the first and only compressionless solid-state battery technology to achieve ARPA-E and DOE VTO Fast-Charge goals at room temperature.
ION is set to manufacture its patented solid-state batteries at scale, thanks to a recent supply agreement with and investment by Saint-Gobain. ION is also partnering with various government agencies to demonstrate the viability of its solid-state batteries in highly demanding environments.
