Ideal Power Adds SymCool(TM) IQ to its Commercial Product Offerings

– Ideal Power Inc. has launched its second commercial product, the SymCool IQ Intelligent Power Module, which offers significant advantages over IGBT modules including lower losses, inherent bidirectionality, and integrated intelligent driver for bidirectional operation.– The SymCool IQ is expected to find applications in renewable energy, energy storage, electric vehicle charging, UPS systems for data centers, and other industrial power control applications.

Ideal Power Inc. has announced the launch of SymCool IQ Intelligent Power Module, the latest addition to its commercial product offerings. This new product builds upon the bidirectional B-TRAN multi-die packaging design of their SymCool power module and incorporates an integrated intelligent driver optimized for bidirectional operation.

Rated at 1200V and 160A, the SymCool IQ offers several advantages over IGBT modules. Key among these are lower losses, inherent bidirectionality, and an integrated intelligent driver that provides protection features such as overcurrent protection, undervoltage protection, and temperature sensing. The module’s compact size and familiar 62-millimeter package make it a good fit for OEM customers.

The power semiconductor market for energy, power and industrial applications is predicted to reach $13 billion by 2028, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6%. The SymCool IQ is well-positioned to address diverse applications within this market including renewable energy, energy storage, electric vehicle charging, UPS systems for data centers and other industrial power control applications.

Dan Brdar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Power stated “The introduction of our second product marks another commercialization milestone for Ideal Power and our B-TRAN technology. The SymCool IQ product provides a low-loss, bidirectional solution complete with built-in intelligent controls for several of our key market segments including renewable energy, energy storage, UPS/data center, electric vehicle charging and other industrial power control applications. We look forward to our first commercial sales from this product next year with sales ramping as customers incorporate SymCool IQ into their OEM product designs.”

Brdar added, “We are introducing products at a great time when renewables, energy storage and electric vehicle charging are in the early stages of adoption. OEMs are looking for more efficient power semiconductors to improve the efficiency of their OEM products and lower operating costs for their customers in these applications. These market segments still have the largest part of their growth curve ahead of them.”

The launch of SymCool IQ by Ideal Power will likely provide electric vehicle engineers with a more efficient power semiconductor solution. This new product could significantly reduce operating costs and advance the efficiency of electric vehicle charging systems.
