GM and Honda begin production of fuel cell system joint venture in Michigan, first in the industry

Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC (FCSM), a joint venture between GM and Honda, has started production at their facility in Brownstown, Michigan.

Established in 2017, it’s the first large-scale manufacturing joint venture to build fuel cells. The hydrogen power solutions produced at FCSM will be utilized by both companies in various product applications.

It’s based on a joint investment of $85 million and has already created 80 jobs within its 70,000-square-foot facility.

The two companies have also worked to lower development and manufacturing costs by leveraging economies of scale, advancing cell design, simplifying supporting auxiliary equipment, utilizing common sourcing, and reducing the use of costly precious metals.

Both GM and Honda believe that hydrogen and fuel cell technology will play an increasingly important role in meeting a wide variety of zero-emissions energy and mobility needs.
