Fortum Battery Recycling and Hydrovolt will recycle batteries in the Nordic Region

Fortum Battery Recycling and Hydrovolt have entered into an agreement to deliver black mass to Fortum’s battery material recycling plant in Finland.

Hydrovolt will mechanically recycle EV batteries at its plant in Fredrikstad, Norway, where the batteries are crushed into black mass and then shipped to Fortum’s hydrometallurgical plant in Harjavalta for further processing. At Harjavalta, the hydrometallurgical process recovers valuable and critical metals from the black mass, which are then used in the production of new lithium-ion batteries.

Fortum Battery Recycling aims to transform the lithium-ion battery value chain for electric vehicle and industrial-use batteries. Hydrovolt, on the other hand, employs a unique dry-environment process that offers enhanced security and cleaner output. This collaboration allows both companies to strengthen their network in the Nordic region.

The increasing need to recycle batteries is driven by the new EU sustainable batteries regulation, which requires battery, electronics, and automotive manufacturers to gradually increase the amount of recycled materials in batteries. Collaborations like the one between Fortum Battery Recycling and Hydrovolt are essential to advancing the battery recycling industry.
