First EV with Farasis Energy’s sodium-ion batteries rolls off the assembly line

Farasis Energy, a battery technology company, has announced the rollout of the world’s first electric vehicle (EV) powered by its sodium-ion batteries, the Chinese JMEV EV3 (Youth Edition).
The vehicle offers a range of 251km, making it suitable for daily commuting and city-wide travel.
Farasis Energy’s sodium-ion battery is a combination of layered oxides and hard carbon. The battery’s energy density is 140 to 160Wh/kg, and it has passed multiple safety tests including pinprick, overcharging, over-discharging, extrusion, and soaking.
The battery pack complies with the no thermal runaway (NO TP) standard in China. It maintains over 91% discharge capacity retention at -20°C (-4°F), and its extended lifespan satisfies the needs of electric passenger vehicles and two-wheelers. Beyond layered oxides, Farasis Energy is also advancing in the development of other premium materials, such as Prussian blue analogues and polyanionic compounds.
The company is preparing for the launch of its second-generation sodium-ion batteries in 2024, which are projected to have an energy density of 160-180Wh/kg, with plans to increase this to 180-200Wh/kg in 2026. Farasis Energy is also forming partnerships across multiple segments, including A00-class micro electric vehicles, electric two-wheelers, battery-swapping services and ESS. The company has received positive responses from clients who have tested their battery prototypes.
The company’s sodium-ion batteries offer excellent low-temperature performance, addressing the low-range challenge recently faced by EVs in colder climates. The safety and affordability of these batteries make them a viable option for a range of scenarios, supplementing lithium battery systems in cost-sensitive and safety-critical areas, including residential, industrial and commercial energy storage.
