Comau advanced automation for Fiat Pulse and Fastback SUVs

– Comau has developed advanced automation solutions for the production of Fiat Pulse and Fastback SUVs at the Stellantis Automotive Plant in Brazil.– The system improves manufacturing efficiency, reduces tool change processes, and leverages Virtual Commissioning and process simulation for optimized design and retooling.

Comau’s advanced automation solutions have been implemented at the Stellantis Automotive Plant in Brazil to enhance manufacturing efficiency and flexibility for the Fiat Pulse and Fastback SUVs. The system accommodates multiple model configurations for both SUV body frames and other vehicles produced by the brand.

The automation solutions feature 74 automatic and 10 manual stations designed to sustainably manufacture the mainline, body sides, respot assembly, and welding activities for both vehicles. The system minimizes tool change processes, leading to time and cost savings, reduced line intervention requirements, and a positive impact on sustainability.

Virtual Commissioning and process simulation were used to program complex stations and meet on-time delivery targets. The technology allowed anticipation of potential issues in robot sequencing and communication between robots and PLC. Additionally, it facilitated identification of improvement points, enhanced process monitoring, and better utilization of legacy plant equipment.

The Industry 4.0 initiative uses IO-Link technology to monitor water and compressed air supplies, providing real-time data analysis and rapid issue detection. Remote configuration and monitoring are enabled, along with PLC software integration for optimized maintenance activities.

The manufacturing line is designed with a focus on safety and flexibility, reducing commissioning time and line interventions. This enables efficient management of multi-model manufacturing needs.

Glauber Fullana, Manufacturing Vice-president for Stellantis South America, said, “Beyond addressing the inherent automation challenges, the Comau team was quick to propose and integrate key technologies to meet our quality and cycle-time objectives. This project, which is part of our Industry 4.0 strategy, has given us more agility and the flexibility to manufacture different versions and other models on the same lines.”

Laerte Scarpitta, Comau Leader for the Americas, added, “The successful launch of this complex project is proof of Comau’s strong commitment to excellence and technological innovation. Our turn-key manufacturing solution allows Stellantis to enhance an existing platform to fully meet its near-term productivity, quality and market volume goals, all while ensuring the possibility for future expansion as needed.”

This advanced automation solution can enhance productivity and flexibility in electric vehicle manufacturing. Its success may influence other manufacturers to adopt similar systems, potentially shaping future production strategies in the industry.
